South Ossetia to be a new Crimea?

Party of United Ossetia in the lead of the parliamentary elections. They called a referendum to became part of Russia, but NATO recognise the region as part of Georgia

NATO didn't recognise «the so-called» political elections held in South Ossetia on Sunday. The elections are supposed to open the path to South Ossetia annexation by Russia, since pro-Russian party Yedinaya Osetiya (United Ossetia) called a referendum on unification with the Russian Federation. The same party is in the lead, with one third of the votes counted in favour. Right now only three of the nine parties participating to the elections were able to reach the 7% threshold required to enter parliament. Together with Yedinaya Osetiya there People’s Unity party (16,4%) and People’s Party (7,5%). But it's too early to can have an idea of the outcome: final results of the parliamentary elections are expected to be announced later in the week. In an official statement NATO immediately said to «don't recognise the election held on 8 June in the Georgian region of South Ossetia». That was a clear political message to Russia.

South Ossetia was formally part of Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and after the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia the region self-proclaimed its independence, only recognised by the Russian Federation. «This election does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement in of the situation in Georgia», was written in the statement. «NATO Allies do not recognise the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions of Georgia as independent states, and Allied defence ministers on 4 June reiterated their full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders». Tension between Russia and international community risks to rise up after this election, especially in case of South Ossetia unification to the Russian Federation. Maybe the international community could open a new stage of sanctions? EU leader as well as G7 leader warned about the possibility to adopt new measures in case of deterioration of the situation. They referred to the Ukrainian crisis, but an eventual "conquest" of South Ossetia could of course security and geopolitics in the far east of Europe. South Ossetia risks to be a new Crimea.
